The ending in "A Sound of Thunder" was a cliff hanger, but an obvious one...
Eckel accidentally kills the butterfly and pleads for it to come back alive and for it to not cause a change. Although by stepping on the butterfly, it symbolizes the "butterfly effect"or "ripple effect" where if one small thing is changed from the passed then it can cause an even bigger change in the future. Due to Eckel killing the butterfly, Travis takes out his rifle and gets it ready. But then a sound of thunder roars in the sky. From my interpretation i believe Travis kills/shoots Eckel because since Eckel killed the butterfly then he thinks he should kill Eckel. This is the ideology of "a life for a life." In order to not cause a ripple effect, Travis takes Eckel's life away for taking the butterfly's life away.
