At first I had no idea how to write this essay. It was all overwhelming due to the loads of elements we had to input and make it a Bildungsroman. However at around 12am the day of it was due, I suddenly gained inspiration and started writing and writing and well... read for yourself (:
A “Helpful” Guide Towards My Evolution Through This Course
“Have you espoused learning?” This question kept repeating in my head like a voice in an empty room, echoing from one ear to the other. I knew the wheels were turning in my head. Constant reflection towards my experience in this course has brought me to the conclusion that i have indeed embraced learning with the help of this rigorous course -difficult as in the hunger for wanting to produce more content and show my abilities however lack of time/motivation were the obstacles faced throughout this course portraying it as rigorous- to enhance my lifelong studies in moral, education, life experiences, as well as my perception of the world.
“Good morning class please take your seats. Today we will begin with the next section of this course. Open up your textbooks to page 50 and begin answering the questions relating to the story. For homework you will read the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and write a book report which will be due by the end of this week.” This is what a traditional english language classroom environment consists of. However, the truth is not correctly portrayed. “Alright class take your seats before I lose my temper. Today we will begin the next requirement of this course in order for you to be eligible to pass the class. Open up your textbooks to page 50 and begin answering the questions to the best of your ability relating to the story. For homework you will read the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and write a book report which will be due by the end of this week. This will be counted as a big chunk of your grade so take your time to perfect it.” This is what a truly traditional english class consists of without the altered thoughts and advice for the students. I have sat behind a desk, hands folded, straight back, with my undivided attention towards the teacher. This form of learning felt like society during the 1950s fear of communism in the United States where every American began to act identical so they wouldn't be accused of being communist. However, thanks to the new way of learning introduced by my extraordinary teacher, the new style of learning has truly changed my experience towards learning. The open-source learning network open many doors for opportunities waiting to be discovered. With my curiosity growing more and more, I explored the wonders of this unique learning. My teacher gave my class the biggest honor anyone can give, Trust. The faith he had towards myself and the class was astonishing. Who is crazy enough to trust a class filled with teenagers to venture off in the world of open-source learning and figure their own way of learning that is effective, but requires endurance and determination? Well, my question was answered the moment i stepped in my English class of my junior year of highschool. I took this gift of learning upon me and took advantage by producing my own content of learning into my blog powered by the great open-source learning environment. My numerous blog posts consisting of critical thinking, analyzation and structured opinion proved the effectiveness of this learning method. “There is always room for improvement,” is what i inform myself whenever i have failed to satisfy myself with the amount of effort i put into my work.
“The lie that tells the truth.” Fiction is a tale with a piece of fact embedded into it. I have dived right into the deep world of many authors and characters who have, in some way, influenced my way of thinking. These people, real or imaginary, have made me reconnect with my own experiences. The legendary speech known as “I Have a Dream” showcased the everlasting hope for positive change such as equality for all. However, history has shown us that true balance will never be achieved. “To those accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.” My friend and i share the same thought. I can relate to Martin Luther King Jr. in his well known speech. His firm belief in hope for equality for the sake of minorities is one of the many dreams we share. I hope to impact others in my journey towards great change. From assisting my local community with positive change to aiding the people living in third world countries. The passion that Martin Luther King had towards equality is equivalent to my desire of influencing youth to pursue higher education in order for them to survive in this era of rapid advancement due to technology and new science discoveries. Self identity is one of the most crucial ideas in life since everybody wants to know their purpose in this world. Emerson was a transcendentalist who wrote "On Self-Reliance" an essay about having faith in yourself, during the Colonial Era. He focused on developing the idea that men should not seek answers from others rather within themselves. Emerson's diction includes complex phrases such as "If malice and vanity wear the coat of philanthropy, shall that pass?" This means that if people with intentions to do evil disguise themselves as good people, should that be okay? This relates to my journey of learning because I too wish to find who I am. In the book Fahrenheit 451, From my perspective I have realized that it is not just about censorship however, it’s about breaking the social norm and realize that in this society we are tied down by the government. We may think we have a say in things, but we don’t. I can relate this to my school system. Countless tests after tests to measure our intelligence and understanding of the curriculum just to get a number that isn’t even valid due to the inability to truthfully value the situation the student was in at the time of the test taken.
I am proud to say that I have something in common with my classmates. My masterpiece was overall about my interest and my curiosity towards pursuing higher education. My classmates such as Adriana and Cassandra who talked about bullying, Pablo who talked about his curiosity for karate, Rafa who talked about the purpose of life, Araceli who talked about why people are bothered by change, and Angie who talked about the study of our bones.
Something that made me laugh out loud was the countless gestures that our teacher made towards his students. He felt comfortable enough to tell us the cold truth. I believe I completed the hero's journey even through a rigorous course due to lack of motivation sometimes. Even though I was not on board throughout the whole course, I believe that the little I did made a difference in my learning experience. I know that there is always room for improvement, but i am very grateful for this opportunity of open-source learning and i will continue to implement it in my learning journey beyond just this course.
